The History of Gambling

Game and gamble has followed the humanity since its first steps. A grain of gamble is evident almost in everything, starting from hunting in the primitive society and up to major financial deals in the 21st century. Elements of game are inherent to many competitions and entertainments, which our forefathers arranged. For example, it is evident in competitions in strength and deftness, which were later transformed into famous tournaments. Later on the first gambling games appeared. They were based on the element of chance, trying one’s destiny.
The historians believe that the very first game was casting various stones, shells, animals’ bones – these objects were the prototypes of the dice. Documental evidence of the first games is stored in the British Museum. Among this evidence are dice, made by an unknown Egyptian craftsman from the elephant’s tusk (16th century B.C.) and a board for playing draughts, also called checkers which belonged to the queen Hatchepsut (1600 B.C.).
Historical evidence attests that all ancient civilizations played dice. Astragalus,i.e. fetlocks of the animals, were mostly used as dice. The word “astragalus” also referred to tetrahedral bricks with indentations, which more resembled modern dice – hexahedral bricks with somewhat rounded corners, in which the opposite facets, when added up, always amount to seven.
In the old days the people played odd and even, cast dice in the circle or threw them, trying to hit certain openings. Dice were also widely used for fortune-telling. It is also interesting that the players treated dice with nearly reverent trepidation, as if the dice were alive: the players talked to them, whispered charms and tried to persuade them to bring victory.
Since their emergence dice almost at once became one of the most venturesome gambling games. The players placed everything in their bet: money, things, dwelling and even freedom (ancient Germans who lost in dice humbly became slaves). At the same time there appeared various lawful bans on this seemingly harmless game. For instance, in the 3rd century B.C. the first known in history law against gambling games was adopted. It was called Lex aleatoria (alea means a die). In Ancient Greece there was a legend that the Olympic gods divided the “spheres of influence” by casting lots (Zeus got the Olympus, Poseidon received the ocean, and Hades came to rule the underworld). The laws of Ancient Rome formally forbade gambling games, but there was no specific punishment for violation of the ban. The only “penalty” for the players was the right of the defeated player to reclaim everything he lost, if he though that he was wrongly or unfairly defeated. Officially the games were allowed only once a year, during the Saturnalia (annual festivities in honour of the god Saturn).
The prototype of the modern deck of cards is the Tarot cards. The first documentary witness that we know of refers to 1254, when Saint Louis issued an edict that forbade card game within France under the fear of punishment with a whip.
Other researchers call Egypt the homeland of cards. The Tarot deck was used for fortune-telling. It had 78 sheets – arkana (22 seniors and 56 juniors).  The pictures on the senior arkans correspond to golden tables, which are preserved in the dungeon of the god Tote in Egypt. Their names are as follows: 1. Fool; 2. Magician; 3. Priestess; 4. Hostess; 5. Host; 6. High priest; 7. Lovers; 8. Chariot; 9. Power; 10. Hermit; 11. The wheel of fortune; 12. Justice; 13. The hanged man; 14. Death; 15. Abstinence; 16. Devil; 17. Tower; 18. Star; 19. Moon; 20. Sun; 21. Court; 22. Peace. It is considered that cards reached Europe in the 10-11th century, during the crusades to the Near East. Other argue that the majority of card games were born in France, which is called the homeland of European cards. The first factory-made deck of Tarot cards included 56 cards of four suits (swords, wands, money and cups). Besides there were 22 trump-cards with numbers from 1 to 21. Every card had a name of its own: the emperor, the empress, the nun, the conjurer, the fool etc. Thus, the deck incorporated 97 cards. Gradually it was substituted by new cards, which more closely resembled the modern ones.
Modern card games (poker, blackjack) arose in the U.S. in the second half of the 19th century. It is difficult to name them all. There are card games for adults and children, games for training logic and wit – and there are games just to beguile the time. The more mature is the individual, the more complex are the games he plays. Having become financially independent, he lets loose his gamble: makes bets, plays in the lotteries, makes bets on the totalizator and finally funds himself in the very temple of game, the casino.

Casino Vacations

Casino vacations are some of the more popular choices for fun and entertainment. It is not surprising then that casinos average more than 50 million visitors a year in the United States.
While most casino vacations take place in well know gambling destinations such as Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Lake Tahoe and the Bahamas, others prefer to take a slow, leisurely and relaxing casino cruise on the open sea. There are casino vacations for everyone from the leisure traveler to the serious gambler, from singles and couples, to entire families. Many airlines and hotels offer all-inclusive casino vacations, which range in price, depending upon the type of accommodations, number of people, length of stay, and destination. You can select the one that fits your budget and interests.
The highlight of a casino vacation is the casino itself, which offers a variety of table games, including poker, blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, pai gow, sic bo, video poker and rows and rows of slot machines. In addition, the casino usually has separate keno, horse races, and high stakes gambling areas. The sounds of people laughing, the clink of coins in the slot bins, the lights and bells, and the anticipation of a winning hand or a jackpot payout are exhilarating and exciting. You can gamble what you can afford, enjoy the free beverages, dine at reasonable prices, or take a chance on the giant wheel of fortune for cash and prizes.
Casino vacations may include tickets to a nightly show or evening entertainment, as well. Arcades and amusements for families with children are often available as a part of the vacation package. Whether you choose to gamble in the casino, take in a show, or do a little shopping, casino vacations are an excellent choice for unlimited fun and excitement.

A Casino Resort

Casino resort room and food deals can be found using the Internet and also tourist services located in the resort you want to visit.  When talking to a specific hotel or motel ask them if they offer any deals for more than one night or during the week when they are not so busy.  Large resorts like Vegas often have super specials listed on the Internet for those that are willing to make a reservation well in advance of the arrival date.
If you are willing to set through a pitch for a vacation club, you can get your room and some shows for free.  These vacation clubs use these incentives to gain access to prospective clients. Casinos with large room occupancy offer specials for those visiting during the week and at what are considered off times.  If there is no offer ask if there is one coming up or is there one you might qualify for in the near future.  Maybe you could shift your visit in order to save a great deal on this necessary expense. Holiday seasons and weekends are difficult times to locate deals if you wait until these dates are just around the corner.  The only way to get a deal for these dates is to make your reservation well in advance.
If you are going to have an extended stay, look into renting a furnished condo for the month or longer.  If you and another couple are making a similar vacation time, this can save a great deal of money over renting from a hotel or motel.  Also you will probably save on the room tax as these rentals are considered in a different class than hotel and motel rooms.
Private residences are also open for longer stays as the people who own them are trying to use their property to make a little extra money. If you are an RV person or a travel trailer owner, the places that rent to these owners are wiling to make deals for stays longer than a day or so.  It never hurts to ask what they have to offer or are they wiling to negotiate an arrangement.
All of this information is readily found on the Internet using any good search engine.  These searches are worthwhile as you can get a handle on what is being offered and at what price.  Most of these sites will have a special for longer stays.

Casino Technological Upgrade

In the course of time, offline casinos have improved graphics and sound and have added new games. Advent of online casinos had become the first considerate achievement in online gambling together with development of broadband access. In these casinos one plays not against computer dealer but against real dealers playing on the real equipment and the player may receive the video record of the course of this game.
Roulette had become the first online game as it is easily broadcasted online and any number of players can parlay on one table because there is no need to make any decisions. The stakes are placed on a virtual table and after that the real spin is made; all gamblers receive one final number and payments corresponding to their bets. By the way, if there are a lot of gamblers in one casino it becomes unprofitable and almost impossible for the latter to swindle and that increases the attractiveness of game. Soon baccarat had become online too: the player does not make any decisions in the course of game and the cards dealing is made on a standard pattern.
But in case of another popular game – blackjack had appeared some difficulties. Many players cannot simultaneously play at one table because they decide to take or not to take the card and these decisions may be different so the dealer cannot simultaneously execute them. That’s why online blackjack, as well as real, is played by one dealer against only a few players simultaneously. As a result this game usually has quite high bets.
Nowadays, there are a lot of online casinos offering three abovementioned games (for example, such games are usually offered in casinos with Playtech software), but at present there is no video poker, although there is talk on its promotion. There is an idea to propose players to use their web-cams: each player will film himself during game and transmit the data to a server which will distribute this data among other players. As a result one can see the opponent’s face during the game and that will add new options, especially for players’ psychology experts. Of course, these proposals are not realized nowadays but when they will be realized the Internet-poker will become quite similar to offline poker.
Appearance and standard clothes are possible to obtain free of charge, though expensive suit or accessories are to be purchased for points (which are collected easily and quickly), and the player can digitize his own face so that his poker avatar is his perfect copy! The players do not sit still – they really move dibs, look at cards (your cards are not shown all the time, it is necessary to press the special button and the player will look at them), express emotions (some standard emotions – from pleasure up to teasing), to play tricks with dibs (a few tricks are free of charge and other are to be purchased for points), pronounce their actions and it is possible to choose the player’s accent. In general, all players agree, that PKR is most realistic of all computer rooms. Unfortunately, you’ll have to pay for all that beauty: firstly, the game runs a little bit slower than in other rooms, secondly, you can play only at one table, thirdly, the game is resource-hungry and on slow PC it runs slower. And finally this game is recommended only to owners of unlimited Internet access (as well as online casinos, however), because it requires quite a lot of traffic. Only its installation requires more than 600 Mb, and during the game the room eats away nearly 10 Mb per hour.
Nobody knows the future result of gambling and technology mix; maybe in some tens of years the effect of presence will be reached, though now we can play the real roulette by means of video broadcast and 3D graphics makes a computer game nearly real. We’ll wait for new interesting decisions which will make the game even more convenient and pleasant.

Casino History

The most famous achievement in the sphere of “system” game against the casino was the so called “card counting” at blackjack – mathematically based methods of game allowing to get some advantage over the casino. The casinos, surely, knows about the existence of “counters” and are trying to oppose them – from changing the rules to banning the game. Sometimes even exceeding the limits of reason and legality. In fact, all the history of the blackjack is the struggle between the gamblers and the casino which is more clever. More than half a century passed since the first attempts of beating the casinos in blackjack, based not on the marked cards and intuition.
Mammoth.
Probably the first person in history who applied mathematic analysis to the game blackjack was Jess Marcum (originally Marcovitch) was born on 30th December 1919. It happened at the turn of 1949 and 1950, when Jess, being an excellent mathematician and physicist-theorist got to Las Vegas. Then his mathematic flair prompted him that most possibly not everything depends on intuition in blackjack. Marcum started analyzing blackjack.  First, the uniqueness of his attempt is that he performed absolutely all calculations with his pen on the paper, on principle without using any technologies whatever weak they might be at that time. Second he had found the solution! Jess manually developed what is now called basic strategy and counting systems ten years before someone else has done that.  He counted that theoretically he had an advantage over the casino of about 3% – under the conditions of that time it was quite real.  Moreover, Markum had been playing blackjack in all known to him casinos- both in the USA and abroad.  His name appeared on the pages of the newspapers as an example of “lucky man” who managed to hit the jackpot. Jess Markum also went down to history as probably the first man thrown out from the casino because of cards. Though at that time casinos did not understand that such system existed. Jess lived in Las Vegas for about a year. The casino owners exchanged the information when they gathered at the general meeting. And they were terrified. After that Markum was not admitted at all Vegas casinos. He went to Reno. The same story- in half a year after unbelievable “luck” the casino owners started making inquiries about the incredible gambler.
These people had never played in casino before, having spent a great number of m/hr, they created basic strategy of playing blackjack according to the most popular at that time rules and published it together with the calculation methods in the specialized math journal for statisticians – Journal of the American Statistical Association entitled “The Optimum Strategy In Blackjack”.
They made several slight mistakes in calculations which is nothing serious taking into account their enormous contribution. A year later they issued a small book Playing Blackjack to Win, which is now a bibliography rarity.

More than half a century passed since the first attempts of beating the casinos in blackjack, based not on the marked cards and intuition.

Casino Games

Casino games are as diverse as the gambling houses themselves. Poker alone includes variations such as stud, draw, Texas Hold-em and many others. Gambling houses often feature so many games it’s hard to know where to start. Indeed, some people take their first night at a given casino as sort of an orientation tour to learn what kind of gambling is on offer.
The casino’s electronic versions of the regular games are also quirky and fun. There are serious video poker players who stake out the high-paying machines, and gamble only on them. Those who watch a serious video poker player long enough will learn some of their strategies, like the “Jacks or better” version where players favor hands, as the name implies, with a face card in it.
Casino dice games are exciting, but sometimes complicated. Variations include “street craps,” “bank craps” and what some people call “Grand Hazard”. It’s good to know what version of game is going on at the table before you lay your money down. Is the casino paying winners who roll seven or eleven? Or are you gambling, roulette style; on the numbers that come up on the dice roll?
Roulette is said to be one of the most challenging games in the casino. The roulette wheel has up to 38 numbered positions for the little ball to land in. You can start your gambling on a single number, odds or evens and other combinations. If you are a beginner, it’s best to research this one online or at your local bookstore first, as the game can be not only mesmerizing, but also expensive for a beginner.
Casino games are fun, but sometimes it’s a good idea to research first, learn the rules, and then go to the casino armed with your understanding of the rules. This insures maximum fun and a good night out. So what are you waiting for? Familiarize yourself with casino rules and get started having fun!

Surrendering a Hand

Blackjack Early Surrender
The Early surrender rule in Blackjack is sadly dying and very few online or land based casinos offer this rule. It simply allows a player to give up half of his wager and stop playing in that particular hand of Blackjack, and this decision is made before the Dealer checks for Blackjack.

If you find a table that offers Early Surrender then below is the Strategy you should use to get the maximum value out of the rule.

There are also some occasions when you should never take Early Surrender and these are: If you are playing in a single deck Blackjack game then never Ten when up against a four and a ten or a 5 and a nine.

In a 2 deck game never Surrender a Ten when up against a Four and a Ten. If you have a Pair of Two’s and the Dealer gets soft 17 then Surrender that hand.

Blackjack Late Surrender

The Late Surrender Blaackjack rule can be found at plenty of online and land based casinos and what il allows you to do is to surrender a hand but at a cost of  half your stake, and you can do this after the Dealer has checked his for a blackjack.

As with every additional rule in a Blackjack game there is a strategy that comes into play to make sure you get the lowest house edge by taking this option at the correct time.

With this in mind we have put together the following information which will help you make the correct move when playing any Blackjack game offering the Late Surrender option.

If you have sixteen in a single hand game and the dealer is showing a nine then don’t take Late Surrender. If however you have a sixteen and the Dealer has a ten or an Ace then you should always take Late Surrender.

Splitting Hands

Best Blackjack Hints

The game rules will always dictate whether you are permitted to split or re-split a hand, and in this section we shall take a closer look at what exactly this means and the correct occasions when it should be used. It is an important part of the game and should not be overlooked.

Once you have been dealt your first two cards and the dealer has dealt everyone elses cards including his upcard, then upon viewing your hand you are faced with many decisions, if your two cards are a pair then more often than not you will be allowed to split them.

Now you should fully understand that by doing so the dealer will separate them into two new hands and you are obliged to place another wager which is equal to your initial bet on this new hand.

Once you have placed this new wager the dealer will then deal a new card to each split card, one at a time. Should you get dealt another pair on either card then you can, (again subject to the Blackjack variation rules) split that hand again, another wager will also be required on the new hand should you do so.

You then play each hand out as you would a standard, single hand. One major rule variation is that Aces can often only be split just the once and will only be dealt just one further card and should an Ace be dealt a ten or ten valued card then this will not be classed as a Blackjack hand but a 21 hand instead.

Most Blackjack games will allow you to split a hand a maximum of three times which means you will be playing a total of four hands in total, but you should always check the Blackjack variants game play rules as dictated on the small sign placed next to the dealer to ensure you comply with any house rules differences.

Top Blackjack Tips

A pair is self explanatory and it is simply two cards that are the same I.E. 2 x sixes or 2 x Queens etc, it is worth pointing out that ten valued cards that is Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings are not classed as a pair but some Blackjack games have certain rules regarding splitting them.

But be warned though the correct strategy is not to split all pairs and we shall now take a look at what to do when you have been dealt a pair when playing a single hand game.

Pair of Aces This move is simple, whenever you get dealt a pair of Aces you should always split them without exception.

Pair of Tens When faced with this hand you should always stand your hand, many novice players will split them, that is not the correct  strategy and will cost you over time. so when faced with two tens stand that hand. This includes ten valued cards.

Pair of Nines You should split your pair of nines unless the dealer is holding a Seven, Ten or an Ace if so then stand them.

Pair of Eights A simple move to remember and that is to always split your eights.

Pair of Sevens This can be a bit complicated but you should split when faced with a dealers upcard of a 2 -7, hit if the dealer has a 8, 9 or an Ace and stick when the dealer has a 10.

Pair of Sixes Split this pair if the dealer has a 2 – 6 and hit if the dealer has any other upcard.

Pair of Fives You should double down if the dealer has any card from 2 to 9 and hit if he is showing Ten or an Ace.

Pair of Fours Hit a pair of fours no matter what the dealers upcard is, don’t split them!

Pair of Threes You should split them if the dealer has an upcard of 4, 5, 6 or a 7 and hit them if he is holding any other card.

Pair of Twos You should split them if the dealer has an upcard of 3, 4, 5, 6 or a 7 and hit them should the dealer have any other upcard.
